CFL error during WRF run

Any issues with the actual running of the WRF.

CFL error during WRF run

Postby huihuojia » Tue Aug 11, 2020 3:05 am

Hi,

I have the CFL error during WRF run. The error is as follows:

Timing for main (dt= 18.38): time 2011-05-25_05:59:41 on domain 1: 1.16724 elapsed seconds
d01 2011-05-25_05:59:41+**/** 19105 points exceeded cfl=2 in domain d01 at time 2011-05-25_05:59:41+**/** hours

Timing for main (dt=******): time 2011-05-25_04:00:00 on domain 1: 2.21132 elapsed seconds

First, I thought it could be resolved by reducing the time step and using w_damp option. But even when the time step is reduced to 5 s, it still crashed.

The 2-step procedure I did is as follows:
1. Using GFS analysis (6 hourly) as the IC and BC at 18 UTC, and do 12 hours forecast. Meanwhile, generate wrfinput_out files which could be used as IC later. This step, WRF works fine.
2. Using wrfinput_out at 22 UTC as IC, and the BC is the same as above, and do another 12 hours forecast. This time, WRF crashed no matter how smaller the time_step I use.

Is it related to the boundary conditions (22 UTC is not exactly at any BC time)? Because when I use 6-hourly ERA5 instead of GFS analysis, WRF still crashed with CFL errors, but when I use hourly ERA5, no problems at all.

Hi, have you found a solution. I'm having the same issue when starting with GFS 0.25 operational data as BC and IC. Thanks in advance
