Real-time run and nudging

Postby cyclone6 » Sat Oct 03, 2015 2:10 pm

I have a question about analysis nudging in a real-time run... I run WRF initialized with 12Z NAM data. In the summer tutorial presentation on nudging, there was a suggestion to use analysis nudging, in an outer domain, throughout the forecast period.

My question is this: The NAM data that I download to run through WRF are also forecasts, i.e., only the 00 HR NAM data could really be called an analysis. The rest are the NAM forecast. I could see how this would be an advantage if each 3-hour period were nudged back toward a true analysis. What is the advantage of nudging WRF post hour 0 back toward not a true analysis, but a different forecast?

Thanks much!
