sst update with WRF NMM

Postby muller » Tue Oct 14, 2008 11:29 am

hello,

I wonder if it is possible to update the SST with WRF NMM. Actually when I add sst_update=1 in the namelist.input file, no wrflowinp* files are created.
thanks for your help

you check file input after run WPS, have variable sst ? before run wrf
if no, you add sst into file input through WPS

sst update with WRF ARW

Postby cinthia_arellano » Tue Sep 11, 2012 3:34 pm

Dear WRF community
I need a help please!! :( I'm trying to update my sst in v3.1.1 wps in order to do so I have the following data
of sst rtg_sst_grb_0.5.20120122
Note: The model input data are GRIB1 NCEP / FNL

the steps I followed are the following:
1. ./ungrib.exe to data 22:00-28:06 --> FILE:2012-01-2*
2../link_grib.csh ../../DadosSST/rtg_sst_grb_0.5.2012012
3. ln -sf ungrib/Variable_Tables/Vtable.SST Vtable
4. ./ungrib.exe

the namelist.wps I'm using is this:

&share
wrf_core = 'ARW',
max_dom = 1,
start_date = '2012-01-22_00:00:00','2012-01-22_00:00:00',
end_date = '2012-01-28_06:00:00','2012-01-28_06:00:00',
interval_seconds = 21600
io_form_geogrid = 2,
/

&geogrid
parent_id = 1, 1, 2,
parent_grid_ratio = 1, 3, 3,
i_parent_start = 1, 34, 33,
j_parent_start = 1, 34, 33,
e_we = 70, 100, 100,
e_sn = 70, 100, 100,
geog_data_res = '10m','2m','30s',
dx = 27000,
dy = 27000,
map_proj = 'lambert',
ref_lat = -12.05,
ref_lon = -77.05,
truelat1 = -12.05,
truelat2 = -12.05,
stand_lon = -77.05,
geog_data_path = '/mmm/users/wrfhelp/WPS_GEOG'
/

&ungrib
out_format = 'WPS',
prefix = 'SST',
/

&metgrid
fg_name = 'FILE'
io_form_metgrid = 2,

I am getting the following error :oops:

*** Starting program ungrib.exe ***
Start_date = 2012-01-22_00:00:00 , End_date = 2012-01-28_06:00:00
output format is WPS
Path to intermediate files is ./
ERROR: Grib2 file or date problem, stopping in edition_num.

thanks for the help!

Hi,

At a first glance, the error message leaves to possibilites:
1. Your SST file is in grib2 format, but your WPS was not compiled with grib2 support.
2. The dates in your SST files are not the same as the dates in your namelist.

Could you check, if one of these cases is true?
Does your SST file contain SST on all dates and time intervals?

Hello,
1. I download the data from the web: ftp://polar.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/history/sst (historic 0.5 degree data - only GRIB1) .According to the website http://www.mmm.ucar.edu/wrf/OnLineTutor ... index.html

2. The dates are the same, except that I have every 6 hours FILE and SST data are daily.

I tried it with your data and found 2 things to be aware of:
1.) delete old PFILE:* and SST:* files before running ungrib.exe !!
2.) ungrib can`t interpolate to 2012-01-28_06:00:00, since it does not open the file for 2012-01-29. Either extend your end date to the 29th or reduce it to 2012-01-28_00:00:00.
For the future, please add the parameter debug_level = 100, to the &share section in your namelist.wps and increase it to some higher values as e.g. 100 to see more detailed information from ungrib (or metgrid).

This thread is now probably off the topic of the previous post, but I shall contribute further to this :)

I encountered the problem "Error: grib2 file or date problem, stopping in edition_num" when using ./ungrib. My problem was that I was linking to a directory, rather than a file using ./link_grib.csh.

For example, my data is stored in "/home/user/Documents/Build_WRF/DATA", and I was using the command
Code: Select all
./link_grib.csh /home/user/Documents/Build_WRF/DATA

while the correct command should have been
Code: Select all
./link_grib.csh /home/user/Documents/Build_WRF/DATA/*

to get the files rather than the directory. Presumably the ungrib.exe was trying to ungrib the folder, and not the stuff in the folder.

Hope this helps.

i gave like this /link_grib.csh /home/user/Documents/Build_WRF/DATA/datafiles/* but again i got the same error ( *** Starting program ungrib.exe ***
Start_date = 2011-04-25_00:00:00 , End_date = 2011-04-26_00:00:00
output format is WPS
Path to intermediate files is ./
ERROR: Grib2 file or date problem, stopping in edition_num.)

Actually i am using WRF3.6 version , I downloaded 26th April 2011 data and when extracted i got fnl_20110425_00_00.grib2.nc to fnl_20110426_00_00.grib2.nc files.
Please help me, Thanks
