WRF total precipitation - RAINSH?

I am posting here as I have found that there is a lot of conflicting information available concerning how to calculate total precipitation from WRF outputs and I’m hoping someone might be able to help resolve it!

The majority of the time, I have found that total precipitation is:
Total Precip = RAINC + RAINNC

Eg:

4 and 5 were especially helpful in that they clearly stated that [RAINC + RAINNC] is precipitation, and that SNOWC/SNOWNC, GRAUPELC/GRAUPELNC are subsets of RAINC/RAINNC (and so shouldn't be included in total precipitation).


However, it is not clear whether RAINSH should also be included in total precipitation.
Total Precip = RAINC + RAINNC + RAINSH

A clear answer is given here http://forum.wrfforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4194 , stating that RAINSH should also be included. Is this the case? If so, it seems that all the above links are missing a variable for total precipitation.

Hi regnos,

Those links you posted are not missing a variable for total precipitation, simply when they were written there was no RAINSH in the model. Even now, not all schemes support shallow convective precipitation.

So yes, if you have RAINSH then it is supposed to add to the total precipitation, as the total precipitation is added together from the different dynamical processes (non-convective/large scale, convective and shallow convection) and not from the different microphysics (graupel, ice, snow etc.).
