Nvidia Tesla performance boost - which test-case ?

Postby zirko » Sun Jun 12, 2011 10:41 am

Hi everybody,

I'm newbie to WRF and want to show performance boost by using Tesla C1060 card to my boss but don't know which idealized test-case is good enough to do that :? Could you drop me some thoughts, suggestions please ?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Zirko,

Take this with a grain of salt, but I don't think much of the idealized cases are going to be able to use your GPU. I know some of the microphysics have been ported over using CUDA, and I think some of the chemistry has been ported over as well. But, from what I've read, the bulk of WRF won't be ported to CUDA, OpenGL or the like any time soon. (It's just the nature of the program that doesn't allow stream processing.)

If you meant that you wanted to use the GPU to display WRF data, that's a completely different story. You can use UCAR's Vapor to provide excellent graphics with your card. (http://www.vapor.ucar.edu/)
