I am trying to run a WRF simulation with 3 telescoping domains. At the beginning of the run, I started to see the same message been repeated again and again:

Even after 24 hours of run it is the same... Could you please help me to figure out what is the problem here, and what is going wrong with my simulation?

I've only noticed this message when I made (erroneous) changes to the Noah LSM module in WRF. Assuming that you haven't made any changes to the code itself, I think this only comes up when there are extreme gradients of variables. Not sure about that. Can you post your namelist.input and namelist.wps files?

Whether or not it is causing this error, you will definitely want to change your time step ratios. 180s is way too big of a time step for 825m. Also, I notice that you have several variables for adaptive time step declared, but use_adaptive_time_step = .false. If you want to use that ability, then you should set that to .true. In any case, even if you are using the adaptive option, you want time step ratios equal to the grid ratios, so that your 825m grid has a time step of 180/16 ~ 11s.

Your namelist files look fine, I think. I did a little research into the Flerchinger equation and this error message. It is generated in the Noah LSM module (module_sf_noahlsm.F). The message occurs anytime that Noah is unable to iteratively calculate soil liquid moisture content using the Flerchinger equation. Since you start getting this error message right away, it implies to me one of two problems: either your initial soil moisture conditions are erroneous, or that WPS is not reading in the initial soil moisture quantities correctly. Check your wrfinput files in NCL or another program able to read NetCDF files and look for anything peculiar in the variables SH2O, and SMOIS such as negative values or values above field capacity. Also, what dataset are you using for initial and boundary conditions?

Hi,

I want to run wrf for idealized 2D hill case. I changed the code to run for NOAH parameterization. This change works for wrf v2.2, but does not work for wrf v3.3.

I receive the same error message, when running wrf.exe. I found out that a new module has been added to v3.3 called: module_sf_noahlsm.F . And actually the error message comes from this program. I added some lines that is suggested in sea-breeze code to include NOAH. While there is no error in compiling the program, but the error message still exists.

Any idea?

Firstly I also got the same messages for WRF-Chem ver. 3.3 for the grid size 1000 m :

The error was the large time step and now with step of 6 sec the model runs without problem, including Noah LSM model.

I am trying to run a WRF simulation with 2 domains (45 Km and 15 Km resolution with 180 Sec time step). It is running few days and after that , I started to see the same message.
