Operational Meteorologist
Posted 29 July 2015

Kinetic Analysis supports informed operational, emergency and risk management decisions and actions by providing clients with real-time hazard event intelligence and long-term hazard risk intelligence. Kinetic Analysis produces hazard event and risk information using its Multi- Peril Risk Evaluation System [MPRES], an advanced, science-based hazard and risk modeling platform for evaluating hazards, damages and losses from meteorological, hydrological and seismic perils.

To support and extend this work, Kinetic Analysis has a position for an Operational Meteorologist.

A successful candidate requires strong analytical skills, meteorological knowledge and modeling experience, and an ability to work with minimal supervision. We are seeking candidates with solid meteorological modeling experience, and who are intrigued by understanding and conveying the potential impacts of weather on people, places, and operations, using open source and in-house modeling and analysis tools.

In the frst year of work, a successful candidate for this position can expect to support:
A) Real-time event analysis operations for active natural hazard events globally, including:
    • monitor operational production processes, support and perform troubleshooting as necessary;
    • support tropical cyclone prediction, including development, enhancement, verifcation, and diagnosis of
    numerical products and forecast systems for hurricane track and intensity from global models; and
    • participate in model reviews, document model methodologies, provide technical support to clients.
B) Tropical cyclone and weather climatology analysis, for use in assessments of long-term hazard and loss risks due to meteorological hazards, including:
    • generation of hazard climatology for tropical cyclone and/or severe weather;
    • interpretation of climatological datasets using appropriate statistical methods; and
    • generation of event and climatology-based risk data.

    • Location: Silver Spring, MD (close to Silver Spring Metro station)
    • Environment: small, growing company, and fuid commercial environment

    • Knowledgable about global and mesoscale atmospheric numerical weather prediction, including numerical techniques and physical parameterization.
    • Familiar with weather information produced by the US Government, and the private weather sector.

    • Familiarization with the display, manipulation and modifcation of large meteorological data sets (e.g. gridded binary and netcdf) in a Linux/Unix environment; strong programming skills (e.g., in Matlab, Python, or R).
    • Knowledge of current and emergent computer software applications to obtain, create, and disseminate weather information (NCL, GEMPAK, AWIPS, NOAAPORT, IDV,McIDAS).
    • Experience confguring and running forecast models such as the Weather Research & Forecasting (WRF) model on Linux or Unix systems including parallel computing, and precipitation simulation.
    • Experience with 3D-Var and 4D-Var data assimilation principals, techniques and operational implementation.
