Modeling Meteorologist

Weather Analytics, a growing data and analytics company in Bethesda, MD, has an immediate need for a talented, enthusiastic, and tech-savvy scientist to join our team. The successful candidate will join the Modeling Team, which is responsible for the development, maintenance and integration of weather, climate and other data into solutions that meet the needs of Weather Analytics customers.

• Help maintain and enhance current automated real-time operational model and product software systems
• Develop new algorithms and products that build on current capabilities and add to Weather Analytics’ intellectual assets
• Respond to customer inquiries with accuracy and persuasiveness
• Access and manipulate global and regional data sets including, but not limited to, those from NCEP's operational WRF, GFS and CFSR data
• Prepare long- and short-term weather forecasts using sophisticated numerical and statistical models
• Use historical weather data to reconstruct the weather conditions for a specific location and time
• Work with team members including database developers and administrators as well as business development team
• Develop forecasts for specific customers such as financial traders, utilities, insurance professionals and others

Required Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in meteorology, atmospheric sciences, or computer science
• Experience designing, running, debugging, post-processing, and modifying source code of the community WRF model
• Experience managing and manipulating meteorological data files, including GRIB and netCDF, and visualizing the data
• Demonstrable critical thinking, writing, and speaking skills
• Desire to work hard and have fun doing it
• Ability to work as part of a team and leverage team member talents
• Ability to present and explain complex ideas to diverse audiences
• Occasional travel to customer sites

• Advanced technical skills: parallel computing, cloud computing, parallel processing (e.g. MPI), Python, database experience (SQL, Postgres), shell scripting, FORTRAN
• Works well with others in a collaborative environment, but also independently
• Sense of humor and flexibility
• Attention to detail
• Experience in an operational, real-time environment
