UNIVERSITY OF QUEBEC AT MONTREAL (UQAM)
DEPARTMENT OF EARTH AND ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES

Post-Doctoral Position in Aerosol-Ice Microphysics Coupling in the Canadian GEM-MACH Model

Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Aerosol-Ice Microphysics Coupling in the Canadian GEM-MACH Model. In this project, it is intended to couple an advanced ice nucleation scheme recently developed at UQAM with the atmospheric chemistry model GEM-MACH. This project is part of the NSERC-funded research network NETCARE, which focuses on the aerosol radiative effects over Northern latitudes. The new coupled model will also be validated against observations taken over the Arctic during a NETCARE field campaign, which will take place in March-April 2015. Once validated the coupled model will be used to perform climate simulations over the Arctic to assess the indirect radiative effects of aerosols.

This position will be based within the Atmospheric Group in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Quebec at Montreal, which is located in downtown Montreal. The candidate will work with Prof Eric Girard group and will collaborate with top researchers in aerosol-cloud interactions from Environment Canada and other Canadian Universities involved in NETCARE. Candidates should have a recent Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, atmospheric chemistry or a related field. Experience of running climate or forecast models, knowledge of Fortran, C and shell script, and knowledge of basic notions of atmospheric chemistry will be considered as assets for this position. The candidate must be fluent in English. French knowledge is an asset.

Montreal is internationally recognized for its life quality. It is the largest French-speaking community outside of Paris. Montreal has a great cultural and ethnic diversity including a large English speaking community. The combination of low living cost, inexpensive rental accommodation, excellent metro and bus systems, its safety and the presence of four universities, renders Montreal as a delightful city for academic life.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae and a one-page statement indicating how they would expect to contribute to the above project by addressing their suitability for the project based on their experience and research interests. Applicants should also arrange for two academic reference letters to be submitted independently. Applications and reference letters should be sent by e-mail in PDF or Word format to girard.eric@uqam.ca. The appointment is for two years and may be renewed for additional years depending of fund availability. The salary is $40K/year. Exemption of provincial income tax is possible. Only candidates who have obtained their Ph.D. within the past 5 years are eligible for this position.
