Postby DougLowe » Wed Jul 15, 2009 2:05 pm

On behalf of Gordon McFiggans I wish to bring to your attention advanced notice of a PDRA opportunity at the University of Manchester in coupled Regional Aerosol Modelling.

In the first instance contact Prof. McFiggans (g.mcfiggans@manchester.ac.uk) for further details or to notify your intention to apply. Please note, there may be a short delay in replying to queries owing to the summer vacation. The post will be advertised shortly on the University of Manchester webpages. (http://www.manchester.ac.uk/aboutus/jobs/research/) where you will be able to find an application reference number and download an application form.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Research Associate / Fellow Atmospheric Sciences 30 months

Salary range £29,138 - £36,912 per annum

The Centre for Atmospheric Sciences (CAS) is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate or Fellow to develop a capability in regional modelling of coupled atmospheric chemistry, aerosol and cloud processes. CAS is involved in a wide range of projects to investigate atmospheric aerosol and aerosol-cloud interaction processes, supported by an established process modelling capability. We have recently been developing a regional modelling capacity and this post will develop linkages with our detailed process modellers to provide a model suitable for interpretation of field measurement datasets and evaluation of the skill of process descriptions.

Two projects have been funded by the Natural Environment research Council for the closely related developments of the regional model in integrated modelling and field measurement programmes. The first is the RONOCO project investigating the impacts of night-time chemistry and the second is the VOCALS-UK project investigating chemistry-aerosol-cloud interactions (http://data.cas.manchester.ac.uk/vocals/). The appointee will be ensure that the coupled descriptions of chemistry, aerosol and cloud processes in the WRF-Chem regional model are suitable for the delivery of the scientific objectives in each project and will conduct investigations to demonstrate this suitability by comparison with airborne field measurements from both field projects.

You should have a PhD in physical science, engineering or a related discipline and have expertise and substantial experience in the development of numerical schemes to represent chemistry and / or aerosol processes in large-scale 3-D models, along with a demonstrated commitment to publication of results. Specific experience with WRF-Chem or similar regional models will be of particular benefit. You should be able to demonstrate a detailed understanding of aerosol processes, including aerosol-cloud interactions. You should have the ability to work independently to achieve your goals but must be able to work collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team. Strong verbal and written communication skills are desirable/essential. Working knowledge of Fortran and Unix/Linux is required. Experience with observational data analysis and massively parallel computing is an asset. In the first instance, the position will last 30 months at £30,395 - £38,758 per annum (higher salaries commensurate with publication record and relevant experience). Additional information about the position is posted at http://cas.manchester.ac.uk.
