How do I make UPP output vertical velocity?

Postby victor.prosolin » Thu Jun 14, 2012 1:19 pm

Hello,
I'm trying to obtain certain vertical velocity values out of UPP output grib files, but it seems that UPP either does not output anything at all or only outputs zeroes for the given variables. Or another possibility is that I'm doing something wrong.

Here are the variables specified in wrf_cntrl.parm:
Code: Select all
(MAX UPDRAFT VERT VEL) SCAL=( 4.0)
 L=(00000 01001 01010 10101 01010 10101 01010 11111 11111 10000 00000 00000 00000 00000)
 (MAX DNDRAFT VERT VEL) SCAL=( 4.0)
 L=(00000 01001 01010 10101 01010 10101 01010 11111 11111 10000 00000 00000 00000 00000)
(MEAN VERT VEL       ) SCAL=( 4.0)
 L=(00000 01001 01010 10101 01010 10101 01010 11111 11111 10000 00000 00000 00000 00000)

The output grib files contain MAXUVV and MAXDVV, which I assume correspond to MAX (UP/DN)DRAFT VERT VEL, but they contain only zeroes so that's one problem. I could not find anything related to MEAN VERT VEL in the grib files.

UPP output contains the following lines:
Code: Select all
Error:         -1021 W_UP_MAX not found in
../../wrfout_nudged.nc
 Error:         -1021 W_DN_MAX not found in
../../wrfout_nudged.nc
 Error:         -1021 W_MEAN not found in
 ../../wrfout_nudged.nc

where wrfout_nudged.nc is the WRF history file with all the data.
so I suppose that UPP can not process those variables unless WRF outputs them. Also, after going through UPP source code I found this in src/unipost/VRBLS2D_mod.f:
Code: Select all
! GSD addition
      ,WSPD10MAX(:,:), W_UP_MAX(:,:), W_DN_MAX(:,:), REFD_MAX(:,:) &
      ,UP_HELI_MAX(:,:),GRPL_MAX(:,:),QRMAX(:,:) &
      ,RAINC_BUCKET(:,:),RAINNC_BUCKET(:,:),SNOW_BUCKET(:,:) &
      ,PCP_BUCKET(:,:) &
      ,SNOWNC(:,:),GRAUPELNC(:,:),TMAX(:,:),W_MEAN(:,:) &

I'm using WRF3.4 ARW em_real without any modifications so I'm guessing the GSD additons are not present there. If UPP supports those variables then I assume that there must be a standard way to get them out of WRF. Does anyone know how it should be done? Any advice on this topic would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Victor.
