Dear WRF users,

I am planning to force WRF with the new ERA5 dataset and I wonder if anyone has experience in setting up ungrib and metgrid with this data? Specifically, do I have to modify the Vtable.ERA-interim.pl and METGRID.TBL.ARW? If so, how?

Hi,

I was just about to post asking if anyone has used the ERA5 reanalysis yet. How have you got on? (thinking of moving to using it from ERA-Interim).

I am considering doing the same thing with trying ERA5 vs CFSv2 with WRF. Does anyone have any results yet trying this combination?

Dear wrf.alessandro,
I'm attaching below some steps that I applied successfully to run WRF with ERA5 as initial and boundary conditions. Hope it will work also for you.

1. EAR5 data were downloaded (on model levels) as described in How+to+download+ERA5+data+via+the+ECMWF+Web+API ECMWF website.

2. with ERA5 surface data run (grib_api or ecCodes must be installed):

echo 'write "[centre]_[dataDate]_[dataType]_[levelType]_[step].grib[edition]";' > split.rule 
 $GRIB_API_BIN_DIR/grib_filter split.rule ${sfc_grib1_file} 


3. with ERA5 model levels data run (grib_api or ecCodes must be installed):

 ${GRIB_API_BIN_DIR}/grib_set -s deletePV=1,edition=1 $ml_grib2_file ${ml_grib2_file}.grib1 

this is a workaround suggested by G. Carver, ECMWF.
Then run:

4. run ungrib.exe by using the following Vtable

6. run metgrid.exe with the standard METGRID.TBL.ARW table

7. run real.exe and wrf.exe as usual

Hello,

I followed steps posted by capecchi but metgrid.exe fails.

I am sure my WRF domain is within the ERA5 boundaries, and I didn't find any missing data on the grid.
Only suspicious thing is that after converting intermediate files 'FILE' and 'PRES' using int2nc.exe results in netcdf file that seems upside-down in ncview.
What am I doing wrong?
