Emissions Shift in WRF/Chem Simulations

Dear WRF Users,

Our group is working on a series of WRF/Chem simulations over the United States and we are experiencing a slight grid-shifting issue with the anthropogenic emissions processed by the SMOKE model, which are converted for domain and format, and then fed into the WRF/Chem model. Instead of being aligned with the coastlines, the anthropogenic emissions are actually slightly shifted, creating a slight mismatch.

Our emissions are processed with the SMOKE model (https://www.cmascenter.org/smoke/) that uses a CMAS/CMAQ model grid framework/format. The SMOKE emissions files are processed and converted to WRF/Chem-ready emission files for input into the WRF/Chem simulations. We notice a shift in the WRF/Chem emissions that we think is due to the fact that SMOKE emissions data are on the center of each grid cell, while WRF/Chem emissions are located on the grid corners. We do not see this shift when plotting the raw SMOKE emissions files – it is only apparent when we make the conversion to the WRF/Chem format.

The species concentrations appear to be shifted at least 4 grid cells to the east and 2 grid cells to the north. We have also tried to update the ref_lat and ref_lon values in the WPS namelist to account for the different grid frameworks between SMOKE and WRF/Chem, but we cannot exactly remove the shift.

Have you dealt with any such issues of a mismatching SMOKE emissions and WRF/Chem grid causing this shift before? If so, do you have any suggestions on how to fix this issue? Perhaps other users that process emissions using SMOKE and then convert them to the WRF/Chem format have experienced this in the past.

I'm planning on working with SMOKE and WRF-CHEM as well, was doing some research and run into your question. I'd love to hear a follow-up on it. Was it possible to solve/get around?
