RIP segmentation fault

Postby robncyns » Wed Apr 30, 2008 2:52 pm

got RIP running but when i'm going past 20 hours i get a segmentation fault. 19 hours its ok, 20 hours it blows up. is there a place in the program files that limits the number of hours you can extract? if so where and how can i change it?

thanks

I have had this same problem when I first started using RIP.
What is likely to be happening is either
1. You have not set 'ptimes' to the same number in both your rip_sample.in and ripdp_sample.in files.
2. You have not created enough met files to forecast past 20 hours. So when RIP attempts to extract met files and plot for the 20th hour and beyond, it stops because there is no data available.
3. You have set your end time incorrectly in your namelist file, so that in a similar situation to (2) above, RIP attempts to keep forecasting to the time you input in the namelist file, but it cannot because there is no data.

Check your input times in these files, and try again.
Does this make sense?

Tristan Shepherd.

thanks for the info. its an issue with the driver.f file. i had to increase maxtserv and maxtsert values. once i did that i've no issues.

I am trying to run RIP4 on Yellowstone I believe that RIP should be working and I was able to run ripdp for wrfarw. I have generated hourly files (from 0 to 12 hours) that I would like to use for a trajectory calculation but when I try to do the calculation I get an error about a segmentation fault.

I ran ripdp using without a namelist file:
ripdp_wrfarw Sierra_Test basic /glade/scratch/lwheeler/em_hill2d_x/wrfout_B-2_2-4km-01-01_00:00:00

Everything worked and so I proceeded to run the trajcalc using:
rip Sierra_Test trajcalc.in

Which contains:

&userin
idotitle=1,titlecolor='def.foreground',
tacc=120,timezone=-7,iusdaylightrule=1,
iinittime=1,ifcsttime=1,ivalidtime=1,inearesth=0,
flmin=.09, frmax=.92, fbmin=.10, ftmax=.85,
ntextq=0,ntextcd=0,fcoffset=0.0,idotser=0,
idescriptive=1,icgmsplit=0,maxfld=10,itrajcalc=1,imakev5d=0,
ncarg_type="cgm"
/
&trajcalc
rtim=4,ctim=12,dtfile=3600.,dttraj=600.,vctraj='z',
xjtraj= 80, 100, 120, 140, 160,
yitraj= 0, 0, 0, 0, 0,
zktraj= 565.4935, 565.4935,565.4935 565.4935,565.4935,
ihydrometeor=0
/

From the documentation I found that when itrajcalc=1 that everything else in &userin is/should be ignored. When I run rip though I get the following error:

Welcome to your friendly RIP (V4.6.6) output file !
Color Names and Fractions Defined
Get header info.
forrtl: severe (174): SIGSEGV, segmentation fault occurred
Image PC Routine Line Source
rip 00000000004C5D60 Unknown Unknown Unknown

libc.so.6 0000003E9481ECDD Unknown Unknown Unknown
rip 000000000040E3F9 Unknown Unknown Unknown

Am I missing any links to pertanent parts of the RIP code? I copied the precompiled directory into my home dir under bin/RIP4/.
setenv PATH $PATH\:$HOME/bin/RIP4/
setenv RIP_ROOT /glade/u/home/lwheeler/bin/RIP4/
setenv NCARG_ROOT /glade/u/apps/opt/ncl/6.1.0/gnu/4.4.6

This thread suggests that the times are possibly the problem but I don't think that's the case and I've tried making adjustments to them and I continue to get the same errors. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Lauren

It turns out that it is important to have this little bit at the end of the input file even if you aren't plotting anything. This fixed the problem and I was able to run trajcalc.

&userin
idotitle=1,titlecolor='def.foreground',
tacc=120,timezone=-7,iusdaylightrule=1,
iinittime=1,ifcsttime=1,ivalidtime=1,inearesth=0,
flmin=.09, frmax=.92, fbmin=.10, ftmax=.85,
ntextq=0,ntextcd=0,fcoffset=0.0,idotser=0,
idescriptive=1,icgmsplit=0,maxfld=10,itrajcalc=1,imakev5d=0,
ncarg_type="cgm"
/
&trajcalc
rtim=4,ctim=10,dtfile=3600.,dttraj=600.,vctraj='p',
xjtraj= 40,
yitraj= 40,
zktraj= 750,
ihydrometeor=0
/
