WRF geopotential height and FNL geopotential height

Postby hongbo » Mon Sep 21, 2009 5:51 am

hello:

I'm a new user of WRFARW and have a confusion about the model output. I got the geopotential height (m) by calculating (PH+PHB)/9.81, which is same as 'z' in WRF2GrADS. But this geopotential height is not similar as the one from FNL data (used for the initial and boundary forcings). The geopotential height from wrfout is larger than the FNL one.

I think some conversion should be done on (PH+PHB)/9.81 so that I can make comparison between WRF output with the FNL hgtprs. But currently, I still didn't find the answer and any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Thank you!
