GFS and NAM data at same time?

Postby cyclone6 » Wed Dec 26, 2012 4:52 pm

I see from the users guide that it is possible to specify both data sets for use in case there is missing data in one of the sets. But is there a way to extract specific data from each one, i.e., RH from the NAM data and TT from the GFS data?

I understand that if I specify: fg_name = '/data/ungribbed/GFS', '/data/ungribbed/NAM' that data will be extracted from the NAM data first, and from the GFS if data is not available in the NAM (as described in the users guide).

But how to selectively pick individual fields from either one...

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

You would have to control this with the Vtable. (Remove RH from Vtable.GFS and remove TT from Vtable.NAM). However, this is not a good thing to do. Initial geopotential height in WRF is reconstructed from virtual temperature calculated from TT and RH. Using two different input models for these will certainly create an unbalanced and noisy field. That is also not to mention the different resolutions of the NAM and GFS grids and the phase and amplitude errors between the two models.
