I have a computer running WRF 3.9.1.1 ARW for about 5 months, doing 4 runs a day using GFS input. The past 3 runs have failed giving the following error:

A very kind man researched the issue and concluded the following:

Land Surface solver of Noah Land Surface Model ("sf_surface_physics = 2," in the namelist.input file) does not work properly with GFS update. If you look at grib files, there were finite values of soil temperature and moisture at sea points before, however now they are NULL as it should be. Not quite sure but NLSM confused with NULL values, and using different Land Surface Model may solve the problem. In my case, I switch to NOAH-MP and successfully completed the run.


I am posting it here in case it helps someone else. The sf_surface_physics value for NOAh-MP is 4.

Dear all,

we had the same problem with our operational WRF runs and we solved at the same way, changing the sf_surface_physics for all the three nested domains to = 4, Noah-MP land-surface model.

We do not know how this would affect forecast quality, specially for 2 m fields. We will see in the next months, but we have not found any alternative workaround.

The Global Forecast System upgrade from version 15.1.0 to 15.2.0 impacted our domain d02 in a few grid points, where the 2 meters temperature (T2) and the Specific humidity (Q2) dropped to unrealistic values in about 3 hours of code integration. (10 km resolution, 40 seconds time step).
