No rainc values on daughter domains/nests

Postby ekimalab » Mon Mar 03, 2014 1:53 am

Puzzled that the rainc GrADS plots from d01 to d02 of a three-nested run didn't show anything at all. The whole nest was blank. I turned off CPS at d03 and d04 , so I understandably didn't have values.

Anyone have an explanation to this? The rainnc, on the other hand, had results. Am I missing something?

Upon closer inspection, the missing values (white rectangle) in both images correspond to the domain d03.

Thanks a lot,
Mike

The variable rainc contains the rain from the convection scheme. If none is active, rainc does not contain any precipitation and everything is found in rainnc. Usually, convection parametrization is used for the coraser grids but not in domains which explicitly resolve convection, so it makes sense that the innermost domain of a 3-nested run does not have any precipitation in rainc. The total precipitation - in any case - is always rainc + rainnc (explicit plus convective precipitation).
